Introduction to Entrepreneurship (ENT0001)

Thursday, January 10, 2019, 6 to 8:45 p.m.

Do you have a business idea you want to check out to see if it’s worth pursuing? How about a micro or small business that needs some business planning to grow? Then the Introduction to Entrepreneurship class is for you. Come learn the process of entrepreneurship from the idea stage into operating a business. This 16 week class will help you get your “entrepreneurial mind-set” and go through all the details needed to be successful in business. 

This first class is free and open to the public. Please register at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introduction-to-entrepreneurship-tickets-51975350673?aff=newsletter.   Attendance thereafter requires you to register as a TCC WorkForce Development Continuing Education student and pay the $225 tuition. The book is not included. The class meets once a week on Thursday evenings at 6 to 8:45 p.m. at TCC’s Center for Innovation in downtown located at 300 South Duval Street in the Kleman Plaza. 

To register for the ENT0001 class if you are not a current TCC student: 

1)         Go to: https://forms.tcc.fl.edu/Application/Application/ContinuingEducation

2)         Click on the Workforce Development button

3)         Complete the application and submit.

4)         Look for a TCC email to the email address you listed on the application.

5)         Log in to EagleNet using the user ID and pin # that was given to you in the TCC email.

6)         Once in EagleNet, chose search for spring 2019 classes and type in ENT0001.

7)         Select ENT0001 (add to your basket).

8)         Complete the class registration and transaction.

Matt Johnson – Funding Your Startup

January Entrepreneurs’ Forum – Discuss the various ways to fund your startup including bootstrapping, friends and family, angel investment and venture capital. Also discuss traditional bank lending as well as alternative financing routes. Specific topics include equity vs debt, understanding investor expectations and ways to make your startup more attractive to investors.

 

Matt is the founder and sole manager of Johnson Venture Partners, a venture fund investing in high-growth startups in the South. Matt has been responsible for the daily operations of the fund since its inception. In his role, Matt identifies and analyzes investment opportunities, performs due diligence, assists portfolio company management teams and administers all investments made by the fund. He has executed investments in 30+ venture-backed companies throughout 15 years of fund management experience. Matt is an active member of many regional and national venture investor networks. He also serves as a director and mentor at Domi Station, a non-profit startup incubator. Matt is a popular public speaker on the topics of startup investing, innovation and entrepreneurship. Matt earned a BA in Economics from Clemson University. Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program, you are introduced to a curriculum that focuses on startups, networking, and competition analysis. Throughout the course, you are introduced to a series of mentoring events, guest speakers, techniques to gain capital, such as crowdfunding, and opportunities to develop and refine your business model canvas. The result is a solid business network of mentors and peers, and a researched and thorough business plan. You do not have to be a TCC student to take this course, you just have to be a veteran with an idea. The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks a highly motivated and organized individual to work as a MARINE RESEARCH ASSISTANT at the laboratory. This is a full time position with full benefits.

 

 

DEADLINE FOR APPLYING IS January 4, 2019 

Responsibilities:

  • Provides oversight (including maintenance, replacement plans, scheduling, and training users) of all laboratory and field equipment supporting program-wide needs of resident and visiting scientists. Laboratory equipment includes, but is not limited to: compound and stereo microscopes with integrated computers and cameras; analytical equipment such as centrifuges, microbalances and drying ovens, autoclave, -80C and walk-in freezers.  Field gear includes a variety of data loggers and field sampling gear, CTD-Niskin array and Remotely Operated Vehicle.
  • Assist all FSU faculty with research as needed and organize use of research space.
  • Ensures that all resident and visiting scientists have the requisite and current state and federal permits for conducting research through the FSUCML.
  • Responsible for working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission to obtain the FSUCML Educational permit
  • Ensures adherence of all users (including FSU and outside groups) to FSUCML Educational and Research Plans.
  • Oversees maintenance of FSUCML Zoological Collection and associated database
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office.
  • Applicant must be physically capable of conducting rigorous field work and have the flexibility to work long hours when needed.

Preferred:

  • Undergraduate degree in marine or related science; four years of relevant experience or Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Working knowledge of image analysis software, Geographic Information Systems and database construction and maintenance.
  • Experience with boat handling.
  • SCUBA diving certification
  • Familiarity with image analysis software, Geographic Information Systems, and database construction and maintenance.

Each of us has unique physical, emotional and spiritual needs. That is never more evident than when confronted with a serious illness. For 35 years, Big Bend Hospice (BBH) has based our care on respecting the patient’s desires and empowering the caregiver/family.

November is National Hospice Month. BBH welcomes this opportunity to let our neighbors know that there is an option when there is no cure. Patients have the right to manage their pain and to live their last days to the fullest extent possible. BBH’s team approach helps to improve the quality of life for patients with illnesses including cancer, cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal or liver disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s and any other disease that, if left to run the natural course, would result death in six months or less.

How do you get Hospice care? Anyone – the patient, the family, physician or friend can initiate the conversation by calling Big Bend Hospice at (805)878-5310. Who pays for Hospice care? All services related to the illness, including prescriptions, are covered through Medicare, Medicaid, or Private Insurance. Thanks to the support from the community through the Big Bend Hospice Foundation, no one is ever turned away from BBH care due to inability to pay.

What is hospice care? It is supportive, compassionate and respectful care for the patient and their caregiver. Hospice is provide wherever the patient calls home, including hospitals, nursing home, and assisted living facilities. Every patient can keep their own physician, but is offered a team of nurses, social workers, aids, spiritual counselors and trained volunteers. If the patient desires, Big Bend Hospice also offers unique services including music therapy, grief and loss counseling, a Veteran Liaison, and animal therapy to complete the team.
