WCHS Invites You to Join
February 9, 2016
Dear WCHS Members and Friends,
We are pleased to announce Historic Cemeteries of Wakulla County as the topic for the Historical Society’s program on Tuesday, February 9 in the Library at 7:00 pm.
The WCHS Cemetery Book (2004) describes 26 abandoned or neglected cemeteries in our community. The Cemetery Project aims to document the current condition of these very important sites throughout the county. The program will feature photos of some of the abandoned cemeteries that are maintained by Historical Society volunteers, a discussion on maintaining cemetery sites and cleaning grave markers: dos and don’ts, and a presentation on how newly found grave marker information is shared with the Wakulla County Genealogy Group and added to Find-A-Grave online.
Speakers for the evening include WCHS Cemetery Project volunteers Debra Jay, Mark Perrin, and Helen Strickland with comments by long time volunteers George Apthorp and Sandy Cook. Currently eight cemeteries are maintained by our volunteers including Richardson, Whaley, Sutton/Ferrell, Wakulla, Giles, Smith/Pawtucket, Chaires/Cates, and Harvey/Ferrell.
This is an invitation to participate in an informative and lively discussion about the Historic Cemeteries of Wakulla County, rich with mystery and fascination. WCHS second Tuesday programs are always open to the public without any admission charge. Please join us for an hour and a healthy dose of history!
