Unite the Gulf for Environmental Justice

June 29, 2011 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Come hear Cherri Foytlin (Louisiana resident, journalist, mother of six, outspoken and involved in current Gulf Coast issues) speak about the lingering impact of the Deepwater Horizon incident on the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf Coast residents.  Cherri recently walked from New Orleans to Washington DC to bring awareness to this problem that is NOT over.  Topics will include health issues of those exposed to the oil/dispersants (and many people in our area have been exposed, contrary to popular belief), continuing economic impacts, worsening ecological issues, and ideas on how we can come together as a community and help each other.  Information will be shared with as well as collected from Wakulla, Franklin and Leon County residents, as well as other interested parties.  Our region continues to feel the economic and environmental impact from this disaster, individuals are becoming ill from exposure to the many toxic chemicals, and the overall human health impact will not be clearly known for five, ten or even twenty years.  We know this from the resulting impact of the Exxon Valdez  spill in Alaska, but our government and the oil industry failed to learn from that tragedy.  Consequently, the Gulf, its animal life, and its people, businesses, industries and unique culture will suffer for that mistake for generations to come.
