2017 Non-Profit of the Year Business Excellence Award Winner

2017 Non-Profit of the Year
Business Excellence Award Winner

Over this year, the chamber articles will be dedicated to the winners of these awards. We’re taking advantage of showcasing these businesses and organizations to honor their incredible dedication and commitment to our community. It’s difficult for me to condense the outstanding work, accomplishments and information in a way to truly express the dedication and commitment by these winners. It is amazing what we may take for granted about some of these outstanding businesses and they are all truly deserving of these awards

Currently there are over 1.5 million registered non-profits in the united states.  That includes private foundations, non-profit organization, schools, chamber, and civic organizations.   Nonprofits account for 9.2% of all wages and salaries paid in the united states and their average share of the GDP was 5.3%.

This year, the winner, DISC Village, has a primary mission of promoting the well-being of individuals, families and those with whom they are closely associated who are adversely affected by alcohol and other drug abuse, crime, behavioral problems and mental health disorders.  This year’s non-profit was opened in 1971.  Disc village Inc. Was the nation’s first drug program to be operated under the auspices of a major university (Florida State).  When the agency relocated to Woodville, it implemented one of the first residential, therapeutic communities for substance abusing adolescents in Florida.   They currently have service sites in Tallahassee, Woodville, Quincy, Crawfordville, Perry and Madison.

Their outreach covers areas which include substance abuse counseling, juvenile civil citations for first time misdemeanor offenders, juvenile diversion alternative programs, selected family intervention, health and wellness and dependency case management.

Thank you for what you offer to individuals and families in need, in crisis and in trouble.  We appreciate the dedication and tenacity of your staff and appreciate your involvement in our community to help heal. Congratulations, DISC Village.  Our 2017 non-profit organization of the year.
