A Day in Panacea – Wild about Wakulla Week

April 7, 2011

Panacea/Ochlockonee Bay Community Showcase

Panacea Mineral Springs – The establishment of Panacea began with the Panacea Mineral Springs, a concentration of small sulphurous springs known for their “˜healing attributes’. In the early 1900s, visitors traveled from across the country, and as far away as Europe, to “take in” the healing waters of the renowned Panacea Mineral Springs. A mule powered tram car carried travelers to this spot. There were hotels, restaurants, health spas, baths, bottled water for drinking, boardwalks, piers and pavilions over the bay, all oriented around the healing power of the springs and bringing prosperity until the Depression. Most of the development was destroyed by a hurricane in 1928.  Although little remains of its past glory, a park now marks the location where visitors can glimpse into the past on this historical site.
Named after the famous healing springs, Mineral Springs Seafood, 1612 Coastal Hwy, Panacea, welcomes visitors to stop by anytime today to watch oyster shucking, to learn how to smoke mullet, and to taste samples of some delicious fresh seafood caught right here in our local waters.  Seafood demonstrations throughout the day, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Crum’s Mini-Mall, 1321 Coastal Hwy,  Panacea, Fl, 32346 (on Hwy 98)
With a relatively long history, cast net fishing is regarded as a traditional method of catching fish that has been used since antiquity.  The history of cast netting here in the waters of Panacea and Ochlockonee Bay dates way back to the earliest beginnings of these coastal towns.  Cast netting remains one of the best ways for catching mullet and bait fish today.  There is an art to throwing a cast net and it takes skill to throw a cast net well.  The folks at Crum’s invite you to stop by today to watch cast net demonstrations and to learn more about this practical art.  Crum’s Mini Mall has been locally owned for forty years and they know fishing.  Cast net demonstrations throughout the day, 10:00 am ““ 5:00 p.m.
